TikTok Grants Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that permits them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

The update is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is deemed low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that many people enjoy content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own choices,” stated a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are now over a billion videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. In total, in excess of 100 mn media items are submitted to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI content they watch by using the content preference feature in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be modified under the setting cover current affairs, fashion, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies mandate content makers to label convincing AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous AI impersonations of celebrities or emergencies. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.

In addition, the platform will henceforth add an artificially created watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is designed to deter users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also introducing a $2 million awareness program for experts and institutions to develop learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will assist educational bodies focused on training programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has supported its safety measures, during controversy over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation team in the UK capital, with worker representatives and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by humans. The platform stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

It is vital to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
