The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
