The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
