Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages leading to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
